Understanding Benzodiazepine Use and Safer Long-Term Strategies
Benzodiazepines (such as Xanax, Ativan, Klonopin, and Valium) are a class of medications primarily indicated for short-term use in the treatment of acute anxiety or panic symptoms. Current clinical guidelines recommend their use only during the initial phase of treatment—while a safer, long-term strategy is being established, such as starting an SSRI or SNRI and engaging in evidence-based psychotherapy (e.g., CBT).
Long-term benzodiazepine use is associated with a range of concerning outcomes, including:
Rebound anxiety and worsening of baseline symptoms
Sleep disturbances and chronic insomnia
Physical tolerance and psychological dependence
Increased risk of cognitive impairment, including early-onset dementia and Alzheimer’s disease (per emerging longitudinal research)
If you are currently taking a benzodiazepine and would like to come off this medication, we can help. Our team can help design a personalized tapering plan tailored to your needs. This includes close monitoring, adjunctive medications when appropriate to minimize withdrawal risks (such as seizures), and the integration of treatments to support anxiety management and overall wellness.
